The internationally-acclaimed website You Are The Ref will literally take football to new heights later this year in aid of The Steve Prescott Foundation (SPF)
You Are The Ref International (YATR) is delighted to announce sponsorship of the SPF's attempt to secure a place in the Guinness Book of World Records by staging the highest game of football, played – on the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. The SPF are already Guinness World Record holders having played the highest game of rugby in October 2015
The game will be refereed by the former Premier League official and YATR Senior Coach Mark Halsey.
The epic challenge – in mid October - is to be undertaken to raise funds for The Christie Hospital in Manchester, the Rugby League Benevolent Fund and the SPF Special Causes Fund.
Steve Prescott MBE, who played for England, St Helens and Hull FC during an illustrious Rugby League career which spanned a decade, set up the Steve Prescott Foundation in 2007 after being diagnosed with a rare form of abdominal cancer. After raising almost £500,000, he died in 2013 at the age of just 39. The SPF has continued his astonishing legacy by passing the £1 Million mark in donations.
“We are elated to be taking a team up Kilimanjaro for what is a really ambitious challenge and who better to officiate the game than the team at You Are The Ref? I am looking forward to joining up with Mark and the rest of the team. Stephen loved his football and there is no better way to continue his legacy" said Linzi Prescott wife of Steve.
You-Are-The-Ref.com is the world's leading source of soccer official education. Its Senior Referee Coach Halsey will be assisted by three of its Academy members in an attempt to raise in excess of £20,000 for the charity.
"It's such an exciting challenge to be involved in. I've already begun training for the event and I cannot wait to see who will be joining me. This truly is a worthy cause and supporters can donate to my Justgiving fundraising page by visiting www.justgiving.com/YATRKILI2017." said Halsey.
A competition to select Halsey’s refereeing team will be held shortly following the recent launch of the YATR’s new online Academy. Those wishing to sign up to the Academy and enter the competition can do so by visiting ( add full website address ).
At 5895 metres (19,341 feet) tall, Mount Kilimanjaro is located in Tanzania, just south of the border with Kenya. It is the highest free-standing mountain in the world and a dormant volcano which last erupted 360,000 yrs ago.
SPF ambassador St Helens rugby league legend Tommy Martyn and SPF Chair Mike Denning have already signed up for the daunting challenge along with 43 SPF fundraisers.
The climbing expedition will be professionally led by Milestone Safaris and Mountaineering of Moshi with planning support from SPF Trustee Ade Cunliffe, who led Kilimanjaro trips in 2013 and 2015.
