WHAT IS THE YOUDAN TROPHY?
The Youdan Trophy is a Not-For-Profit company, commemorating the oldest football tournament in the world – the Football Challenge Cup presented by Thomas Youdan Esq. that pre-dates the FA Cup by a full four years and was played only once at Bramall Lane in 1867.
Our Youdan tournaments promote the well-being of young people through sporting competition, cultural & heritage appreciation and education, in addition to providing marque teams and talented up-and-coming players with the opportunity to forge long lasting friendships and memories across many nationalities and cultures.
The tournament, in it's third year, is held in Sheffield and features some of the top teams from across the world, including Europe, Asia and North America. The teams spend a week away from home at top class accommodation The Edge, based at the University of Sheffield. The competition aims to immerse young players into a real-life footballing environment.
Hosted by You Are The Ref, a unique referee education platform, they organise the teams, fixtures, venues, accommodation, food and travel to the venues. Last year saw the size of the championships increase from eight teams in 2015, to thirty-two. 2017 will see a further eight teams take part increasing the number to forty.
Youdan Pro 2016 attracted 30 match officials from 7 countries to the tournament, all of whom received high quality training throughout the week; these numbers are set to be further extended for Youdan Pro 2017.
The competition is proud to host the games in Sheffield. Having played a major role in the culture and history of football and creating more than several ‘firsts’ in the sport, the city shaped much of the modern game and it is now fitting that it celebrates that legacy through the Youdan Trophy.
Youdan Trophy has received plenty of support since its inception, there is currently a Steering Group that actively works to increase its profile. On the panel are:
Sir David Richards
Lord Mayor of Sheffield Denise Fox
Councillor Terry Fox
Richard Caborn - Former Sports Minister
John Mothersole – CEO Sheffield City Council
Andrew Denniff - Rotherham & Barnsley Chamber of Commerce
Neil Anderson – Neil Anderson PR

We're passionate about getting involved within our local communities and helping good causes. Since 2015 the team have taken part in or held events to raise in excess of £8,000 for The Children's Hospital Charity and local youth housing charity Roundabout.
The Children’s Hospital Charity
Children come from all over the country to see Sheffield’s hospital specialists. The money raised through donations buys life-saving equipment, funds vital research and treatment for thousands of children from across the world and helps them create a comfortable, engaging environment for their patients.

Roundabout is Sheffield's youth homeless charity. Every day, they provide shelter and support to over 150 young people in Sheffield who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Donations help provide a safe place for young people and help them to provide the support and life skills to help break the cycle of homelessness.

Marc Nicholls - Seattle Sounders Coach
"We have been fortunate in attending many top tournaments and the Youdan Trophy is right up there with the best. From excellent fields to the Olympic village feel at the accommodation to the warm and hospitable welcome. We are delighted to be returning in 2017."
Ian Lavery - Everton FC Youth Academy Coach
"The Youdan Trophy provided us with the type of experience we normally have to travel abroad to get. Well organised, good facilities. This has the potential to be a Top tournament to attend."
David Bailey - Accrington Stanley Academy Head of Recruitment
"Thank you for allowing us into the Youdan Trophy tournament. The opportunity and experience we shared will have a great impact on our young players lives, in today's world with so much negativity towards youth development."
Daniel Gill - Charlton Athletic FC Youth Development Lead Coach
"Thank you again on behalf of all the lads at Charlton FC for what was once again a very well organised and structured tournament. This provided us with an opportunity to work with a group of players in an environment away from the norm. The Youdan not only offered us the opportunity to play against some very good sides but also experience a sample of life as a full time football player."
Martyn Olorenshaw - Birmingham City FC U13 - U14's Lead Coach
"A massive thank you, I thought the tournament was outstanding form start to finish and massively valuable to our players. The accommodation was brilliant, transport and logistics of the coaches could not be faulted. Thank you for the invite and we would love to be considered next year."
Dean Mohareb - Tournament Director
"Our vision is to have a world class youth tournament, that provides professional clubs and players with development opportunities on and off the field of play."
Gary Gibson - Rangers FC Academy Coach
"I think this tournament provides something unique in the UK. The organisation has been fantastic. Everything surrounding the tournament has been first class."
Greig Robertson - Celtic FC Youth Academy Coach
"A tournament like this is badly needed in the UK. We normally have to fly to Europe or to the States to get real competitive games in a tournament format."
Adam Lawrence - Charlton Athletic FC Youth Development Lead Phase Coach
"We can't be short term thinkers when it comes to development. It's a marathon, not a sprint. There are some big flaws in the present system. Young players are not being given the opportunity to experience high level competitive football."
Neville Burbeary - Sheffield Wednesday Youth Academy Coach
"It's important that we support something like this as professional football clubs. It's tournament football and it's what our kids need. We should be exposing them more to it."
David Hirst - Barnsley, Sheffield Wednesday, Southampton & former England International striker
"The Youdan Trophy competition is going to be one that everyone looks forward to and becomes a big market in football."
