HACKETT’S VERDICT: New history in the making

Posted on

A few months ago I was charged with collecting the Youdan Trophy from sculptor Graham Ibbeson who had created a wonderful piece of work for our international youth football tournament.

Graham's workshop is based at his home in Barnsley and when I called I was given a conducted tour. Les Dawson, Laurel and Hardy, Eric Morecambe and Morecambe and Wise are a few of the famous figures I found scattered about.

Graham was working at the time on a sculpture commemorating England's worst mining disaster, at Oaks Park, Stairfoot, Barnsley.

The unveiling of that has now taken place and I know that the ceremony was rather poignant given that one of Graham's relatives was killed in the tragedy. A large number of descendants followed a brass band to attend the event.

So, if you are visiting Barnsley you can see Graham's various works - which include Dickie Bird, the most famous umpire.

Graham, the team at You Are The Ref send you their congratulations.
