The case related to our company’s 2014 application to register a YOUDAN TROPHY football logo.
Jock Waugh, director of Youdan Trophy tournament organisers You-Are-The-Ref.com said: “Our application had been opposed by Hallam F.C. on the grounds that the club claimed to own established rights conflicting with the YOUDAN TROPHY name. That claim was emphatically rejected. It had, indeed, always been our contention that, despite winning the world’s first-ever football tournament in 1867 – the Football Challenge Cup, sponsored by Sheffield theatre owner Thomas Youdan – Hallam F.C. did not own rights in the name.
“We are aware that the nature and implications of the legal challenge being mounted against us were frequently misunderstood, which gave rise to concerns in some quarters. We therefore take this opportunity to thank the many who have supported us unwaveringly throughout this most unfortunate and, in our view, quite unnecessary legal process.
“Naturally we are delighted to have our position vindicated. The original decision of the UK’s Intellectual Property Office in 2016 was, in our view, clearly correct. It was time-consuming, costly and distracting to have to deal with a long-drawn out appeal. In fact, the dispute has gone on so long that the original logo we sought to protect through registration in 2014 has already been modernised.
“Having successfully concluded the case, we can now focus still harder on our vision of building a programme which capitalises on the fantastic energy, commitment and footballing heritage of Sheffield. The Youdan Trophy is already growing year-on-year. Even before last year’s tournament was over we had already had clubs from all over the world seeking admission to our 2018 event. We have worked hard to create a credible and inspiring brand, and have great confidence for the future. We hope and believe that the people of Sheffield – the true birthplace and home of football – will share our vision.”
