The Football Challenge Cup was both sponsored and presented by Thomas Youdan Esq. back in 1867. The competition pre-dates the FA Cup by a full four years and though, only played once, it is without doubt the forbearer of all modern cup tournament football that followed. Today, our aim is to promote the well-being of young people through sporting competition, cultural & heritage appreciation and education, in addition to providing marque teams and talented up-and-coming players with the opportunity to forge long lasting friendships and memories across many nationalities and cultures.
The tournament, in its fifth year, is held in Sheffield and features some of the top teams from across the world, including Europe, Asia and North America. The teams spend a week away from home at top class accommodation based in Sheffield. The competition aims to immerse young players into a real-life footballing environment.
Youdan Trophy 2015-2018
Our Pro and Development Tournaments offer the chance for young players to come together and experience what a professional real life tournament feels like, helping them build experience and confidence. It also gives them the opportunity to create new bonds with other like-minded players from all over the globe as we host a number of international teams from countries such as Oman, USA, Canada, South Africa, Ireland and even Japan. In addition the Youdan Trophy puts them in front of key influential members of the footballing community such as club owners and scouts for large clubs such as Chelsea, Arsenal, Brighton and Manchester City. We also have had a number of different National scouts attend.
The Youdan Trophy Pro tournament first started in 2015, being held at Bramall Lane, Sheffield, with only 8 teams. We grew to 32 teams in year two continuing to self-fund, with 40 teams in year three, and 16 select fee paying clubs in year four, welcoming nearly 2000 players to the city. We have seen teams from the likes of Celtic, Manchester United, Everton, Houston Dynamos, Leeds United, Kawasaki, Al Habsi and Seattle Sounders.
Our Fourth Year
In our 2017-2018 tournament we saw: 800 players, 4,000 spectators, 40 teams, 12 different countries. We also saw around 100 scouts attend!
We also host Development tournaments for grassroots and younger development teams. We cater for various age categories to give a variety of age groups the opportunity to build their skills in a real life tournament situation. In honour of the World Cup this year we also held an inter-schools tournament with Sheffeld and surrounding areas primary schools. All the schools came together to enjoy a day of football, choosing a country each to represent, with the Lord Mayor of Sheffield in attendance to present the awards. For the future we plan our programme to include girls’ competitions, conventions and overseas franchises to add to our short term plan of growing our soccer tours operations.
